MS Surface Pro Sells Out
Microsoft started selling its Surface Pro tablet last Saturday, and quickly ran out of its supply of the 128GB configuration.
While the less expensive 64GB device was also listed as out of stock Saturday on Microsoft’s online store, by Sunday it was again available.
The company acknowledged the outages.
“We’re working with our retail partners who are currently out of stock of the 128GB Surface Pro to replenish supplies as quickly as possible,” said Panos Panay, general manager for Microsoft’s Surface line, in a Saturday blog post. “Our priority is to ensure that every customer gets their new Surface Pro as soon as possible.”
Numerous online reports noted the shortages, saying that some Microsoft retail stores sported Apple-esque lines on Saturday and that many Best Buy and Staples locations — Microsoft’s retail partners for the Surface in the U.S. — had single-digit supplies that in some cases were claimed earlier in the week.
Microsoft is selling the Surface Pro in the U.S. through its online e-mart, its approximately 70 retail outlets, and the Best Buy and Staples chains.
The device, which runs Windows 8 and is powered by an Intel processor, sells for $899 in a 64GB storage configuration, and for $999 with 128GB. Keyboard-cover accessories — the Touch Cover and Type Cover — sell separately for $120 and $130, respectively.
IBM Moves Into Oracle And HP Turf
Big Blue wants to take on competitors such as Oracle and Hewlett Packard by offering a cheap and cheerful Power Systems server and storage product range.
Rod Adkins, a Senior Vice President in IBM’s Systems & Technology Group said the company was was rolling out new servers based on its Power architecture with the Power Express 710 starting at $5,947. He said that the 710 is competitively priced to commodity hardware from Oracle and HP.
Adkins added that IBM is expanding its Power and Storage Systems business into SMB and growth markets. The product launches on Tuesday. IBM said it will start delivering by February 20.
HP Looks Beyond Windows
Hewlett-Packard has announced the availability of its latest Pavilion laptop with Google’s Chrome OS as the PC maker attempts to improve laptop sales by offering an alternative to the Windows OS.
The Pavilion 14 Chromebook has a 14-inch screen and runs on a dual-core Intel processor. The laptop is roughly 21 millimeters thick, and weighs 1.8 kilograms. It offers just over four hours of battery life, said David Conrad, director for product management at HP’s consumer products group.
The laptop is expected to ship on Monday in the U.S. starting at $329.99. The company did not immediately provide worldwide availability information.
HP wanted to widen its product offerings and the new Chromebook is targeted at those who do most of their computing on the Web, Conrad said.
“It’s really about choice. We have a very wide offering,” Conrad said. “We think the time is right for an additional choice for people to have a gateway to their Google digital lifestyle.”
The laptop has only 16GB of solid-state drive storage, but will offer 100GB of free Google Drive storage for two years.
The Chromebook has the same design as HP’s other PC offerings, which mostly run on Windows and have standard-capacity hard drives. But, with a lot of data moving to the cloud, the Chromebook provides a different usage model.
“We see this as another device to be used around the house. It’s easily managed,” Conrad said.
Hitachi Releases Terabyte SAS Drive
Hitachi has released the first 1.2TB 10,000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard drive for servers.
Hitachi’s hard drive operation, which is now part of Western Digital, continues to develop server and workstation hard drives while its parent firm concentrates on units pitched at desktop and laptop computers. The firm, which was the first to introduce a 1TB hard drive back in 2007, has now surpassed that barrier with its 10,000 RPM 2.5in Ultrastar C10K1200 SAS drive.
Hitachi slips a 64MB cache in each hard drive and quotes a mean time between failure (MTBF) for the Ultrastar C10K1200 of two million hours, suggesting that the drive will be perfect for those users that do big data analysis. The firm touts connector compatibility with its own Ultrastar solid state disk (SSD) drives and promotes the use of tiered storage for those considering SSDs.
Dell has announced support for Hitachi’s Ultrastar C10K1200 drives in its Poweredge and Powervault servers, with Hitachi saying that other OEMs have also qualified the drive for use in their servers.
Enterprise storage vendors such as Hitachi are pushing tiered storage for those firms that want the performance of SSDs but require the capacity of traditional hard drives. While Hitachi is right in pointing out the need for firms to deploy both SSDs and hard drives, with SSD makers rapidly bringing down prices that mix might become SSD biased within a few years.

Kingston Technology is claiming the world’s highest capacity USB 3.0 flash drive with the one terabyte (1TB) Datatraveler HyperX Predator 3.0.
Announced by the company’s Kingston Digital Europe affiliate, the Datatraveler HyperX Predator 3.0 is shipping now in a 512GB model, with the 1TB capacity set to be available later in the first quarter.
The new drive is also slated as the fastest USB 3.0 flash drive in the Kingston storage line, with read speeds of up to 240MB/s and write speeds of 160MB/s, according to the firm.
“The large capacity and fast USB 3.0 transfer speeds allow users to save time as they can access, edit and transfer applications or files such as HD movies directly from the drive without any performance lag,” said Ann Keefe, Kingston regional director for the UK and Ireland.
Featuring a casing made of zinc alloy for shock resistance and high-end design, the Datatraveler HyperX Predator 3.0 also comes with a custom Kingston key ring and a HyperX valet keychain.
The new drive is fully certified for Superspeed USB 3.0 operation, while keeping backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 to allow it to be used with older computer hardware.
WD Going 5TB Next Year
According to Russian website Almodi.org that managed to snag some screenshots of WD’s plans for the next year, it appears that Western Digital wants to bring 5TB drives in both its Green ant the Red Series in Q4 2013.
In addition to the 5TB WD50EFRX Red series and the WD50EZRX in the Green series, the Q3 2013 will also bring 4TB drives in both series. Of course, we are talking about 3.5-inch drives that will feature 64MB of cache and SATA 6Gbps interface.
The slides also do not reveal any info regarding standard 3.5-inch Blue series and 2.5-inch Scorpio line of drives. As you may remember, WD has recently announced a 4TB version in its Black series lineup so 5TB one might come sooner than in the Green or WD Red NAS line.
Lenovo Launches The IdeaPad
Although it was introduced six months ago at CES, Lenovo’s new IdeaTab has finally showed up at Lenovo’s site with a pretty decent price around $343.20. The IdeaPad comes with a 10.1-inch screen, Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, Android 4.0 ICS and optional keyboard dock, it certainly sounds like a good deal.
The specification list for the Ideatab S2110 kicks off with a 10.1-inch IPS 1280×800 display, Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0 ICS OS. The rest of the specs include back 5MP and front 1.3MP cameras, 802.11bgn WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a battery capable of up to 9-10 hours of WiFi web browsing, according to Lenovo.
Same as the Asus Transformer line of tablets, Lenovo’s Ideatab S2110 also features an optional keyboard dock that gives you an extra ten hours of battery life and adds two USB ports and a card reader.
Western Digital Goes Red
Western Digital has announced a completely new WD Red line of hard disk drives designed specifically for home and small office network attached storage (NAS) devices.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with WD’s Blue, Green, and Black series, the Red series offers 3.5-inch HDDs available in 1, 2 and 3TB capacities and are designed for NAS systems with one to five drive bays. As noted, all three models will be packed in a standard 3.5-inch form factor and feature SATA 6Gbps interface and 64MB of cache.
According to WD, these HDDs have been compatibility tested with top NAS box manufacturers and optimized for both power and performance, which is, at least according to WD, a much better way to go considering that consumers had to choose between desktop or high-end server drives for their NAS devices, with neither being cost effective or fully NAS compatible.
According to WD, the new Red line feature 3D Active Balance Plus enhanced balance control technology feature that should significantly improve overall drive performance and reliability.
Seagate Gobbles Up Lacie
Seagate has signed a deal to buy consumer storage vendor Lacie that values the firm at $186m.
Seagate, which recently completed the acquisition of Samsung’s hard disk unit and swiftly cut warranties on most of its drives to just one year, has now announced that it will buy hard drive packager Lacie. Seagate has signed an agreement with Philippe Spruch, Lacie’s chairman and CEO, to purchase his 63.5 percent stake in the company at $7.05 per share in cash, which values the firm at $186m.
According to Seagate the purchase should help the firm grow in Europe and Japan. The firm also announced that Spruch will be employed by Seagate and run its consumer products division.
Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, CEO and president said, “Lacie has built an exceptional consumer brand by delivering exciting and innovative high end products for many years. This transaction would bring a highly complementary set of capabilities to Seagate, significantly expand our consumer product offerings, add a premium branded direct attached storage line, strengthen our network-attached storage business line and enhance our capabilities in software development.”
Lacie’s fancy portable hard drives are popular among those who like fancy cases wrapped around bog-standard consumer hard disks. Seagate’s purchase of Lacie should see the firm not only become the sole supplier of hard drives in Lacie products but make a renewed push in the consumer portable hard drive market following last year’s floods in Thailand that affected the three big hard drive manufacturers.
Seagate said the deal should be completed by the third quarter of 2012 pending regulatory approval in the US, France and Germany.

Western Digital is about to introduce a 2TB My Passport Essential series external drive. According to some early listings, the new 2.5-inch drive should set you back just over $200.00, more important is that it seems like a pretty interesting external drive.
It measures 110x83x18mm, so we assuming this is a 12.5mm drive and as such it won’t fit into most notebooks. However, as an external drive it is second to none. It features USB 3.0, but it won’t be the fastest thing around, as it is a 5400rpm unit.
